LUSK – The Niobrara County School District #1 school board met on March 11. Niobrara County High School (NCHS) senior Phoebe Allbright was honored as student of the month for January. She had missed the previous month due to illness.

Guest Wes Vetter read a letter he and his wife, Stephanie Vetter, had composed for the school board. Within the letter, they requested the school board consider their concerns surrounding the high school girls’ sports teams. Vetter enumerated the benefits of being part of a team and the opportunities it afforded students. Vetter read also they would like to see “…special attention be given to providing an environment in which our athletes can feel self-worth, experience personal successes, and build camaraderie with their teammates and coaches.”

The Lusk Herald contacted Stephanie Vetter in hopes of gaining some elaboration concerning this statement. However, Mrs. Vetter declined to comment further.

Regarding the Vetters’ statement, Superintendent George Mirich told the Herald, “We’re glad they [the Vetters] were able to come in and share their thoughts. We certainly appreciate them bringing their concerns to our attention and letting us hear what they have to say directly instead of learning about it secondhand.”

The school board accepted letter of resignations from, Lusk Elementary/Middle School (LEMS) principal Tiffany Assman, Jillian Miller and Samantha Miller. Brianna Redfern was hired as Special Education Counselor for the new year.

An update from the business manager revealed the district’s current health insurance cost will experience a 13% increase next year. To curb costs, the district will be looking for a different insurance provider.

Superintendent George Mirich reported the intercom replacement project is almost completed in both NCHS and LEMS building.

Administrators renew for next year are Kelly Bilbrey, Katie Caffee, Kathrine Kruse and Taylor Wagstaff.

The next school board meeting will be held on April 8 at 6 p.m. at the school district office.
