LUSK - With the resignation of councilman Adam Dickson the council has appointed Ron Pfister to fill the vacant position on the Lusk Town Council. Ron Pfister was sworn in at the August council meeting.

LUSK - The Niobrara Community Benefit Bridge group has finished their 2022-2023 season. Dues collected were donated to the Stagecoach Museum to be used on their projects.

LUSK - The June meeting for the Lusk town council held several major items including visitors for golf tournaments, and a report from the interim ambulance director.

The Niobrara County school board meeting kicked off their meeting at 6:00 p.m. on May 22

LUSK - During the public meeting for the BLM Resource Management Plan revision for the Newcastle district, of which Niobrara county is part of, the representatives from the state and from various departments and divisions of the Bureau of Land Management were available to answer questions from the those gathered at the May 17 meeting.

LUSK - Around Lusk appreciation for those who have served their country in the military can always be found but Memorial Day weekend is a special time.

LUSK - The NCHS spring music concert kicked off with an accompanied cover of “The Sound of Silence”. A Disney-themed introduction to the choir members via a multi-media presentation created by Samatha Kelsay.

LUSK - Chad Krause, Field Manager of the Newcastle Bureau of Land Management office opened the most recent public meeting with a thank you to those who had taken the time to come to the meeting.

The regular meeting of the County Commissioners May 16 was called to order by Chairman Pat Wade. After the Pledge the first item on the agenda was Fred Thomas from Road and Bridge with his report. He said Cheyenne River road was completely done and they did a really nice job. Crews had some left over gravel and they put it on the Weston County side to help the neighboring county. Thomas also received a report from one of the ranchers that there had been two pickups riding around the pasture in the mud off road.

LUSK - Elks Lodge #1797 held a Mother's Day Luncheon and awards presentation on May 7, 2023.

The County Commissioners meeting 5/2/23 began with Barnie Reece and Bill Matthews discussing the south Van Tassell Road and the traffic through the winter. They had discussed the problem at their town council meeting and have contacted the Goshen County Sheriff's Office to see if there is any way that the two counties, Goshen and Niobrara, can work in conjunction with each other to come up with a way to stop the unauthorized traffic on the county roads. They all realize that the biggest problem is Google Maps giving people directions to use these roads. They want to know if there is a way we can get Goshen to shut down the road in their area and we close the other end in Niobrara. According to Under Sheriff Kelly Dean the south Van Tassell road is actually Highway 159 and is state highway the entire way, therefore the state should be included in the discussion and decision making.

Not many organizations remain in effect for a long period of time, however, the Niobrara County Homemakers is not one of them. Celebrating 90 years in existence, the Homemakers will be hosting their Annual Spring Tea with a Birthday Party theme during Homemakers Week May 7-13.

On April 11, 2022, in the District Court of the Eighth Judicial District of and for Niobrara County two cases were brought before Judge Buchanan.

“All the Light We Cannot See” is the featured book for the Read and Feed book discussion on Monday, May 8 at noon. From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning author Anthony Doerr, the stunningly beautiful bestseller is about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Books are available at the library.

Lusk Town Council had a full agenda as they discussed multiple ordinances, golf tournaments and plans for the Tiger Plunge. The meeting starting with visitors from the LEMS Tiger Club. Students met with council and Mayor Lytle prior to the meeting to talk about the role that a council and Mayor play in society. During the formal meeting Tiger Club discussed their microsociety activities. Each student has a “business” that functions within their micro society. The students also hold elected or appointed positions. Students have been learning about not only government structure but business and business expense as well as personal income and personal expenses.

“Winchester 73” is the featured film on Monday, April 24 at 6:00 p.m. as the third installment of Jimmy Stewart’s American West Dinner & Movie series.

The April 18, 2023 meeting of the County Commissioners opened with Fred Thomas reporting on the Road and Bridge. They have begun the road project and called to find out if Niobrara was going to be running extra trucks on the new road which Thomas stated the county would not be running extra trucks. T

News from Niobrara Hospital

LUSK - County elected officials and department heads came to the commissioners meeting to give their monthly updates. Sheriff Starkey reports that law enforcement utilized the Police department side-by-side four times during the storm. He says the jail is busy and with the melting the jail is starting to drip again but the contractor will be here on Thursday to look at it.
