LUSK – Guernsey-Sunrise was the first opponent in Tiger Gym last week but Nio- brara County High School had the upper hand from the start. A 9-0 run to start the game was followed by a Ridge Kupke three pointer and Lusk held a 16-11 first quarter lead.
Cory Bruegger and Aidan Mattheus combined for 16 points in the second as the Tigers had already forced 14 turnovers. Lusk stretched the lead to 34-15 at the midpoint, with substitutions flowing freely.
Mattheus moved the lead to 20 early in the third, and Mat-
thews made it 30 with a slick putback and free throw to wrap the period with a 59-32 advantage on the scoreboard. The junior varsity did the mop-up work in the 69-48 win.

Friday night’s trip across the state line was another fast start from the Tigers with Bruegger and Miller com- bining for 16 points. Mattheus added a pair of treys and Lusk was ahead 24-4 after one. Kupke and Swisher took turns showing their range in the second as Kupke had a hat trick, and Swisher sank two long bombs. The halftime score was 52-16, and again the substitutions were moving quickly.
The home squad chipped seven points off their deficit during the third quarter, but a 14-1 run from Lusk in the fourth ended with the 80-39 win. A highlight was Miller getting a break- away dunk before retiring to the bench.

With Sioux County High School vis- iting Tiger Gym Saturday afternoon, the home squad forced seven first quarter turnovers and raced to a 17-4 lead. Miller’s putback and free throw helped the Tigers to a 30-11 halftime score.
Mattheus and Kupke each sank tri- ples, sending Lusk on a 14-3 quarter scoring edge. The JV finished up the 59-22 victory again as the Tigers enter the holiday break with a 6-1 record. The schedule will get much tougher as the calendar turns to 2024, with a trip to Hemingford, Nebraska on January 2. After that trip, basketball fans will be in for a treat with several of 2A‘s best boys teams visiting Lusk.
The 2A East Smackdown will have NCHS facing Big Horn and Wright on Jan 5, with Sundance and Tongue River in town the following day.
