Tiger Tracksters Open 2024 Campaign in Morrill

MORRILL – The Tigers braved the chilly, windy weather in Morrill, NE, on Saturday to compete in the Morrill Early Bird Meet.

The boys started the season off in style by scoring 50 points to place 5th out of the 18 teams from Nebraska and Wyoming.

Senior Cory Bruegger opened with a pair of prequalifications.  He won the triple jump by 2 feet with a jump of over 41 feet and placed fourth in the pole vault clearing 11-00.

Sophomore Nathan Miller won the high jump clearing 6-00 to prequalify for State.  He also went 18-05 3/4 in the long jump to win bronze and ran 12.12 seconds in the 100-meters to place sixth.

Senior David West was the other gold medal winner in the 800-meters.  The future Chadron State Eagle ran an impressive first race in a time of 2 minutes, 11 seconds.

Newcomer Isaac Assman had a great day placing sixth in the 300-hurdles in 46.43 seconds and barely missed the finals of the 110-hurdles.

The boys’ 4X400-relay team of West, Bruegger, Corbin Matthews and Brady Swisher ran a great race in a time of 4:01 to bring home the bronze medal.

Freshman Raynce Brott rounded out the scoring by placing fifth in the shot put with a throw of 40-11.

The standout for the girls was Gracie ZumBrunnen. She ran a prequalifying time of 13.47 seconds in the 100-meter finals to bring home the bronze.

Freshman Marleigh Smith was the lone other placer in the high jump, placing sixth with a jump of 4-08.  She also qualified for the finals of the 100-hurdles, but did not place in the top six.

The girls’ team placed 12th.  

The Tigers plan to travel to Wheatland on Thursday, March 28 before Easter Break.
