Diamonds on the Prairie

It has been a long time coming. Thirty years ago, my sweetheart, Greg, was diagnosed with an inner ear disease, and we knew from that moment he would eventually need a cochlear implant. Over the years, Greg’s hearing has gone from good to about as bad as it can get. Our home is often filled with frustration as he tries to function in the noises of a world that sounds very different to him.

Often times Greg will draw inward into what our family calls “the box” when trying to hear becomes too hard and the noise becomes too much. Our conversations are pretty much down to the “need to know” things of life versus casual conversations that most have because, frankly, it is too much work to try and figure it all out.

All of these things are about to change. After waiting for what seems to be a long time, Greg now has a date for cochlear implant surgery. My sweetheart will once again enter the hearing world! Can you feel the excitement in our home as we anticipate the day when his hearing will once again be possible?

Greg has developed certain habits during this time, and so have I. I will repeat things very nicely the first two times; after that, the scowl on my face appears, and my voice isn’t a loving voice. It now holds a hard edge to it, and by golly, I’m not going to repeat myself anymore! I truly am not angry; I am just as frustrated as he is.

I am so thankful for a savior that doesn’t treat me the way I do Greg. Through his Word, the Bible, or through others, He will tell me something. Sometimes I may not hear it the first time, but then he gently keeps speaking in different ways, through different means to get my attention. I am not picturing His face as mine appears full of frustration, but a face of a loving Father who wants what is best for me. Greg was born with a disease, but the reality is, all of us were born with a disease; it’s called sin. It will take a medical miracle to restore Greg’s hearing and the miracle has already taken place to heal us of our disease; his name is Jesus. God gave his one and only son, Jesus, as the perfect sacrifice for us.

Oct. 26 is the day that Greg’s miracle will take place. You don’t have to wait for a special date or time to ask to be healed of your sin problem. A gracious and loving heavenly father is standing by just waiting for you.

Romans 10:9-10 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

Give it some thought friends. Why not today?
