On Saturday, March 12, the Niobrara County High School Rodeo club hosted its annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner at the Niobrara County Fairgrounds. This event is a yearly fundraiser for the Rodeo Club at NCHS. The proceeds from this event help to provide scholarships as well as clinic fees for current members. Over 300 tickets were sold and approximately 250 dinners were prepared. Everyone who attended were served roast beef, donated by Clark and Associates, baked potatoes, green beans, salad and rolls donated by the Pizza Place. Delicious chocolate mint brownies and ice cream with lime sherbet punch topped off this amazing meal.
A silent auction and gun raffle were held in conjunction with the dinner. There were many fantastic items in the silent action including a hand-crafted bit by Gary Johnson, a beautiful set of Elk horn lamps, several unique pieces of jewelry and even loads of pipe or alfalfa hay. Pat Miller had the winning bid on the bit while Robin Allen procured the elk lamps.
After dinner, the club held an auction to buy a baseball cap which in turn allowed the winner to play a game of heads or tails in order to win a 300 Winchester Short Mag rifle. Only 10 caps were auctioned off by Josh Keller. The ten winning bids were Al and Eva Titchner; Greg and Jolene Bebo; Kristie Smith; Cody and Cheri Thompson; Justen and Tricia Miller; Pat and Bev Miller; Cory Clark; Chad Arnett; Jim and Diane Hall and Greg Matney. Greg Bebo won the game as well as the rifle.
After the dinner, Rodeo Coach Skye Martin stated, “The dinner is always an extremely successful event. I am very proud of the team members and their ability to work together to host an event for our community. I especially want to thank Heidi Sturman and Tiffany Thurston for their tireless work in the kitchen getting the food prepared and Lorrie Reed for the beautiful decorations. In fact, there were so many people that contributed their time and effort for this dinner and the result was simply fantastic.”
The members of the NCHS Rodeo team are Tyler Arnett, Colton Miller, Ace Thurston, Taylen Arnett, Colby Thurston and Bryce Sturman. The first rodeo of the spring season is April 1-3 in Thermopolis, Wyo. For the complete article see the 04-06-2011 issue.
