During a visit to Wyoming in 1981, for the purpose of interviewing for a job, June Willson Read, PhD spent time in Lusk visiting family. It was at the same time as the Dell Burke Estate Sale was being held. She realized people were sharing many stories about Dell Burke before and during the sale. She felt there was a story that “needed to be told.”

In the subsequent years, she was employed as a mental health therapist at the Washakie Mental Health Center in Worland and the Family and Children’s Services in Greensboro, N.C. On returning to Wyoming in 2000, she became aware that Dell Burke’s story was still “alive” and untold.

In her presentation on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.at the Stagecoach Museum, Read will describe the years spent researching and writing the manuscript for Frontier Madam, The Life of Dell Burke, Lady of Lusk. Although it came out in 2008 and sold well, it is now out of print. Read will discuss how “when life gives you lemons, you can make lemonade”. She has opted to produce a second edition, which will appear in the fall, and is collecting interviews for a companion book.

Read is a native of Niobrara County, having grown up on a cattle ranch west of Lusk. Following her education in the Lusk Schools, she attended the University of Wyoming, majoring in Journalism and after an interlude of marriage and creating a family, she returned to college to study anthropology and obtained her doctorate at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. She now lives in Greensboro, N.C. and returns often to her home in Jay Em and to visit her family.
