The NCHS boys track and field team has begun practicing in hopes of finishing among the top handful of teams again. They were the 2A East Regional Champs and finished second to Lovell at last year’s state championships.

While head coach Dennis Zowada has announced his retirement at the end of the school year, he is looking to finish his 27th season with another top five finish (or possibly Lusk’s first state championship). Zowada has about 20 boys out this spring, which isn’t near the numbers that defending champ Lovell or the likes of Thermopolis, Burns and Big Piney will suit up. Quantity of athletes is what it is, but NCHS boasts some of the best athletes in Wyoming and once again should be competing for regional and state titles.

Seniors Dakota Clark, Kolby Eddy, Hunter Dockery and Matt VandeBossche all qualified for state last season and are looking to finish their NCHS careers with another strong showing. Clark and Eddy will be running sprints and the speed relays while Dockery and M. VandeBossche will be doing the long and triple jumps. Dockery will also compete in some of the sprinting relays and VandeBossche runs the hurdles. Aaron Christianson is also out again and will add depth to the throwing crew.

Junior Martin Fitzwater is back to defend his state shot put title and classmates Derick VandeBossche, Adam Kraft, Justin Robinson and Shawn Thompson are also returning. Kraft is a jumper and will also be involved in some of the middle distance events. Thompson throws the shot and discus and Justin Robinson runs the long distance events and pole vault. D. VandeBossche placed fourth in the high jump last year at state, as well as running the hurdles. Jacob Robinson and Zach Venable are out and will be in the mix for some of the distance running. Venable sat out last season while this is Jacob’s first season in high school track.

Sophomore Logan Lamar qualified for state in two events as a freshman and will be looked at to run some sprints and the jumping events. Eleven other freshmen and sophs are on the team and in order for NCHS to compete with the top tier of schools, will need to come in and score team points and provide depth.

“If we have the proper work ethic, and kids in events where we should have them, we should be in the hunt again,” said Zowada.

Zowada is assisted by longtime throwing coach Ron Nelson, Jim Lyons (4th season) and Chris Skeen is new to the staff after several years with the Moorcroft boys.

Lusk took a group to the Chadron Indoor meet last Saturday and will be at the Morrill Invite this Saturday. The only home meet of the season is scheduled for May 6.
