Known surviving Niobrara veterans of WWII were guests of honor at a program held on Sunday afternoon in the Stagecoach Museum starting at 2 p.m. Wally Petrie, chairman of the museum board welcomed the visitors and board member Eleanor Aamodt introduced Donny Heckert, who serves as Commander of both the American Legion Ferdinand Brandstetter Post #1 of Van Tassell and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3511 of Lusk. The American Legion Post #1 of Van Tassell has the distinction of being the first American Legion Post formed in the entire United States.

Veterans George Dixon, Darryl Manring, Bud Allen, Bud Owens, Harry Brown and Rex Shoults were present as honorees, with others from Niobrara County, Will Allsup, Ray Taylor and John Barker unable to be present.

Pertinent facts about the branches of the military were shared by Commander Heckert. Willy Wilcox, a Vietnam veteran, told brief histories of each branch of the military, and shared that the Army is the oldest at 238 and 3 months years old, the Air Force was once a part of the Army until 1947 and now includes NASA and space flights as part of its program, the Navy is the largest in the world and the modern navy dates back to 1794, the Marines serve all over the world and once was part of the navy, and the U.S. Coast Guard is the oldest continuous sea service and serves in both domestic and foreign waters. He sang the official songs of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard after sharing each history.
