Lusk recieves drug return box

Posted: Wednesday, Oct 2nd, 2013

Lusk Chief of Police, Sean Dreesen displays the new med return box obtained through the “Patnership for Success” federal grant. It will be debuted at the Niobrara County Health Fair Oct. 13.

The residents of Niobrara County are the recent recipients of a Prescription Drug Drop Box. The receptacle was purchased by a federal grant awarded to the Wyoming Department of Health through the “Partnership for Success” program and managed by the Wyoming Association of Sheriff’s and Chief of Police. 20 units were placed with law enforcement agencies throughout the state as a result of this grant. The purpose of the drop box is to remove unused prescription drugs from circulation in an attempt to prevent their diversion to non-medical uses. According to Tim Feathers, Executive Officer for the Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police, “Studies of prescription drug abuse, especially among young people, indicates that the primary source for acquiring prescription drugs for abuse is through theft from friends and family members”. Under current state and federal statutes, law enforcement agencies are the only ones that can legally accept and possess Schedule II, III, IV, or V prescription medications.
