Over the week-end at the Wyoming State Track & Field Championships, the Niobrara County Tigers claimed the 2A Boys Runner Up Trophy scoring 74.5 points. Lovell ran away with the championship scoring 127 points, Wind River placed third with 73 and Thermopolis finished in fourth with 48 points. “We had a pretty good state meet”, commented Coach Dennis Zowada. “Going into the meet everyone knew Lovell would be untouchable, but if we could get up on the podium and earn a trophy that would really cap off a successful track season. I was extremely proud the way the boys competed. Most every trackster had their season best performances at the state meet, and that is the most you can hope for.”
Earning the Runner Up Trophy was not easy. Going into the final event of the day, the Tigers were trailing Wind River by 4.5 points and the Cougars did not have a 4 X 400 Relay Team. The 4 X 400 relay team of Kolby Eddy, Grady Penfield, Travis Smith and Hunter Dockery knew that they needed to finish at least in fourth place to earn the Runner Up Trophy. Their season’s best time of 3:37.03 earned them the bronze medal and the second place team trophy. “In visiting with the Wind River coaches after the state meet, about the only thing they were cheering for was for us to drop the baton. They knew we had a pretty good relay team,” said Coach Zowada. “It’s always fun to have something on the line going into the final event of the day at state. The boys really stepped up and as we always tell them, every point earned over the weekend is valuable.”
