Helpmate educates Niobrara County

Posted: Thursday, Apr 18th, 2013

The month of April is an informative one for those seeking to educate themselves about sexual assault and crime victims’ rights. It is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which means a greater degree of public attention will be paid to this pervasive social ill. In Lusk and Niobrara County, the leading disseminator of information concerning this rather sensitive topic is Helpmate Crisis Center and Crime Victims Assistance Program. Their role in this campaign of education will be all the more preeminent from April 21 to April 27, a time-frame encompassing National Crime Victims Rights Week.

For over 29-years, Helpmate has been lending a hand to those that are in need, ranging from victims of various crimes to domestic violence.

The Office of Justice Programs website states, “Each April since 1981, OVC (Office for Victims of Crime) has helped lead communities throughout the country in their annual observances of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) by promoting victims’ rights and honoring crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf.”

“These things are very prevalent in Niobrara County, more so domestic violence,” said Marcie Bruegger, Executive Director of Helpmate. “There is sexual assault too, but it is still out there and people don’t realize how much we actually do have it.”
