The Lady Tiger basketball team traveled to Sheridan in hopes of a return trip to the 2A state tournament, but poor shooting saw them bow out in the Saturday morning elimination game.
Thursday’s East regional tournament opener against Wright was a rematch from just seven days earlier which the Lady Panthers won by six points. The first quarter featured lots of turnovers and missed shots from both squads as tournament jitters were quite evident. After one quarter Wright led by a 4-2 score and at halftime it was 11-8 Lady Panthers. The teams combined for just five field goals and missed a dozen free throws.
The offenses warmed up a little after halftime and NCHS took their first lead with two minutes left in the third. Wright rebounded with a 5-0 run to finish the third quarter back on top 21-18. The Lady Tigers clawed their way back into the game with much better shooting and it was close until the last 1:40 when Sami Starkey hit 3 of 4 free throws and Kaylee Seeds hit 1 of 2 to give Lusk the lead for good. Solid defense keyed NCHS to the 32-28 win and advance to the semifinal round.
