Posted: Thursday, Jan 10th, 2013

CASPER - A major national entity has given a preliminary go-ahead to oil and gas explorers targeting eastern Converse and western Niobrara counties.

The BLM Casper Field Office has released the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) and decision record for three environmental assessments (EA) in central-eastern Wyoming, including the East Converse EA, which encompasses a portion of western Niobrara County. In short, the documents would allow for up to 444 horizontal and vertical oil wells to be drilled in the three EA areas.

The East Converse EA is comprised of 125,000 acres between Converse and Niobrara counties and, and there could be between 18 and 72 wells drilled in the area.

According to records from the Wyoming OIl and Gas Conservation Commission, there are 13 permits for horizontal wells in Niobrara County. This stands in stark contrast to that of Converse County’s horizontal well activity; there are currently 491 horizontal permits in Converse. Four companies hold permits in Niobrara County: Chesapeake Operating, Inc. , Fossil Creek Resources, LLC, Cinco Natural Resources Corporation and Yates Petroleum Corporation.
