Lusk opened the 2012-13 season hosting the sixth annual Tiger Jamboree and beat Big Horn and Sundance Saturday after falling to Glenrock on Friday.
The Friday game against the 3A Herders was a typical first game of the season- lots of missed shots and careless ballhandling from both sides. Hunter Dockery scored the first six points of the game but the Herders were faster to the spot and took control of the first quarter. After one the score was 21-18 and a sign of things to come for the Tigers. Glenrock continued to lead as the game was very physical and the Tigers rebounded poorly. The visitors led 38-31 at halftime, despite Dockery’s 14 points. A pair of Herder triples stretched the lead to 46-35, before Lusk came charging back as the third period closed. Matt VandeBossche and Denton Shaw each answered with treys and the Tigers got within 53-48. Dockery and Shaw each nailed three pointers, as Shaw’s second of the period gave NCHS the 59-57 lead. As the clock wound to ten seconds, the Tigers clung to a 64-62 lead. Herder soph Tyler Olson then took the ball past two Lusk defenders and heaved a prayer skyward from 23 feet out. The ball was on line, bounced around the rim a couple times and rolled in with barely a second to play. Time expired before NCHS could call a timeout and lost 65-64. Lusk put themselves in trouble all day as the game winning three pointer was Glenrock’s tenth and the Herders outrebounded NCHS by 17, 13 coming on the offensive side.

Saturday morning the Tigers had to rebound against the Wyopreps third ranked Big Horn Rams. Dockery kept his hot hand going with a pair of early triples and had Lusk’s first ten points. After one period the score was 14-13 in favor of the home team. Shaw and Dockery each nailed three pointers and Lusk kept the advantage going into the halftime break, 31-23. C. Christianson hit a layup and three pointer on consecutive possessions but otherwise Lusk’s shooting had cooled. By the end of the third BH had fought back to tie it at 40. The Rams never led in the fourth, but Lusk never really put them away. Freshman Jordan Jackson scored the first six points of the period while M. VB and Shaw combined to hit five of six free throws down the stretch. Lusk held on to snap a seven game slide against the Rams (dating to the 08-09 season) with the 60-52 win.

Saturday’s Jamboree finale pitted the Tigers against always pesky Sundance. M. VB got it going for Lusk with his four point play just minutes into the game as the Tigers opened an 11-2 lead after one period. The lead could have been more but like the other games, NCHS missed countless layups and putbacks. The offense exploded in the second as the Tigers went on a 19-5 run capped by Dockery’s triple, and the halftime lead was 33-8. Sundance played even with the Tigers in the third period but found the deficit too big to crawl out of. Head coach Rich Murray saw the lead grow to 42-11 at one point and by game’s end was able to put in the younger players for some quality minutes. The game ended as lopsided as it began with the 63-37 final score.
