Brackets set for softball tourneys

Posted: Wednesday, Jul 30th, 2014

On July 23 there were five softball games played at Northside Park before the regular season was completed Monday night.

Deckerís Food Center clinched the top seed in the Rec tournament with a doubleheader sweep of the Undergrounders and 3 Sisters. In the first game the Undergrounders kept it close early before Deckerís blew the game open with eight runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings in winning 24-7. In the nightcap they scored five runs in each of the second and sixth innings to beat 3 Sisters 15-1.

Monday night Mill Iron 44 had a doubleheader against the Undergrounders and 3 Sisters. They scored six runs in each of the first two innings to win 25-8. 3 Sisters won the late game 12-11 with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to clinch the two seed.

The recreation league tournament begins Aug. 4 with MI44 at 3 Sisters at 6 p.m. followed by Undergrounders at Deckerís at 7:30. The defending champ Deckerís will be missing some key players and face an uphill battle in their attempt to win back to back titles.

In the competitive league MI44 lost their third game in a row in a 16-15 walk off decision to the Covered Wagon Thunder. In the next game the Covered Wagon Lightning defeated the Rawhide Outlaws 18-13 before the Thunder and Lightning faced off. The Lightning clinched the top seed in the tournament after defeating their rival 19-17. Monday night featured the Outlaws and Razor battling for the three seed in the tournament. The game was tight all the way and while Rusty Razor put fives on the board in three different innings, it wasnít enough as the Outlaws needed (and got) six runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 22-21.

The competitive league tournament begins Aug. 4 with the defending champ Thunder facing Rusty Razor at 5:30 before MI44 plays the Outlaws at 7 and the winner of game one facing the Lightning at 8:30. All five teams in the competitive league are very balanced and the upcoming tournament will be entertaining for the spectators.
