The NCHS girls basketball team didn't play sharp basketball but did enough to overcome Hailey Bruegger and Kaci Jo Skrukrud's shooting slump to win in Bayard, NE last Saturday.
Lusk never trailed and Lexi Blackburn's back to back jumpers helped push the Lady Tigers to a 12-7 lead after one quarter. Skrukrud hit back to back baskets to open the second quarter but from there both teams had a hard time shooting. Only ten points were scored in the period and Lusk led 18-11.
The home Tigers came out of the locker room inspired and went on a 10-4 run to get within 22-21 before a time out. Amy Bergstrom combined with Jessica Bruegger for a pretty give and go to up the lead back to five. Skrukrud sank Lusk's only three pointer near the end of the period, giving NCHS the 31-23 lead. H. Bruegger hit a jumper to move the lead to 33-23 and Blackburn's basket gave the Lady Tigers their biggest lead at 36-23 moments later. Lusk was able to work the clock and control the rebounding edge to get the 41-30 win, and move their season record to 7-7.
H. Breugger was just five of 14 from the floor while Skrukrud made four of 13 in shooting slumps that NCHS needs to go by the wayside as the second round of conference games begin. While avoiding the pigtail game is of primary concern, the winner of the 4-5 matchup will likely run into Tongue River during the first round of regionals. TR obliterated Moorcroft 66-1 last weekend, as All-State point guard Sarah Rawlings is back on the court after missing the first half of the season rehabbing a knee injury.
