Skyler Hoopes

CHADRON, NEBRASKA - It didnít take Skyler Hoopes long to get his name in the Chadron State College track and field record book

Hoopes cleared 15 feet, 5 inches in the pole vault on Saturday while making his college debut with the Eagles at the Yellow Jacket Holiday Classic hosted by Black Hills State University in Spearfish. The old CSC record of 15-3 was set by James Hobson, a native of Cheyenne, in 2001.

Hoopes is a 23-year-old redshirt freshman who graduated from Niobrara County High School at Lusk in 2008. He enrolled at Chadron State in the fall of 2011 after spending two years on a Mormon Church mission. He practiced with the Eagles last year but did not compete while getting acclimated to college life and athletics again.

His mark on Saturday provisionally qualifies Hoopes for the NCAA Division II National Meet in March.

Hoopesí parents, Gary and Kelly, now live in Mountain View, Wyo.

The menís pole vault was one of 15 events that the Eagles won during the meet.
