After a scoreless first quarter, NCHS rolled up 36 points in the second en route to beating Pine Bluffs 43-0 on Gibson Field at Fullmer Stadium last Friday night. The Tigers move to 5-0 on the season and picked up their third conference victory.

The game started as a defensive struggle as neither team could get much offensive momentum going. Hornet quarterback Taylor Fornstrom was stopped on a fourth and two deep in Tiger territory but the Tigers coughed it up as the quarter ended scoreless.

With Hornet seniors Brady Lamb and Landon Naranjo already sidelined, the game turned quickly in the second when Fornstrom injured his ankle. On substitute Marquice Rivers first play from scrimmage, Travis Smith scooped up an errant toss and raced 30 yards for the first TD of his career. Matt VandeBossche scored the two point run and the lead was 8-0.

Hunter Dockery scored the next two Tiger touchdowns- one on each side of the ball. The first came on a 26 yard reverse, while the second came just 29 seconds later as he snagged a Rivers pass and made his way 25 yards to the endzone for his fifth interception of the year. M. VandeBossche was stopped on the first conversion attempt but Bryce Sturman and Colter Larson hooked up in the corner for the second attempt. In just four minutes the lead was 22-0 Tigers.

The NCHS defense was up to its usual stifling ways, and when Larson stiff-armed his way through the Hornets with a bruising 33 yard touchdown run, the game was well in hand. He added the two point conversion for the 30-0 lead. As the first half wound down Lusk had one more opportunity and Sturman called his own number to get the six yard score. Zane Hladky’s PAT was wide left but the lead was 36 at halftime.

The Tigers moved the ball on PB but took nearly six minutes to get in the endzone. Grady Penfield was the workhorse and capitalized from seven yards away. Hladky’s PAT was good and the score moved to 43-0.

For the final 17+ minutes the JV squad got some quality playing time and moved the ball but had a few untimely penalties that kept them from scoring. The game ended 43-0 and NCHS will likely retain their #2 ranking in the Wyopreps coaches/media poll.

A late Monday newsbreak from Wyopreps: It has been reported that Southeast used an ineligible player in their win over Pine Bluffs and has forfeited that victory.

This week is a short one for the Tigers as they host a Natrona County JV squad on Thursday. “We can’t look at this as a JV team, when you suit up over 100 players you’ve got lots of good athletes to choose from,” said head coach Matt VandeBossche. “They’re going to be big and athletic so we certainly better be ready for a football game.”

Lusk and the other NCHS have met seven times on the gridiron (4 varsity/3 JV) with the Tigers only win in the series coming in Lusk by a 13-7 score in 1955. The last game was a 52-7 Mustang win in Casper in 1970. The five seniors will be honored for Senior Night before the 6 p.m. kickoff.
