The NCHS boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Moorcroft last Saturday and came away with a pair of important varsity wins.

The Lady Tigers got off to a slow start, yet so did the home team, as the score was just 8-7 Moorcroft after one quarter. The Lady Wolves got a little offense going in the second as they opened up a 20-12 halftime lead.

The Lusk girls slowly took over the game in the second half as the lead was cut in the third quarter and NCHS outscored Moorcroft 14-3 in the final quarter for the 34-29 come from behind victory. The win improved NCHS to 3-11 on the season.

NCHS Scoring- Rebecca Lashmett 10, Hannah Shoults 9, Breanna Bredthauer 9, Jessie Sturman 2, Katelynn Miller 2, Chrisanna Lund 2. Rebounds- Lashmett 11, Shoults 6, Miller 5. Assists- Dani Dooper 4.

The JV girls dominated the Lady Wolves with a 45-9 beating. Amber Christianson was leading scorer with 12 while Emma Tschacher and Hannah Shoults each scored eight. The C-squad played two quarters in Moorcroft also but came out on the short side of an 11-3 score.

The Tiger boys had a tough task against the fifth-ranked Wolves, who no doubt still had bitter memories from last season’s loss to the Tigers in the state semifinals. Lusk got out to a 21-14 first quarter lead and after that it was a back and forth battle all game.

For the next two quarters neither teams lead was bigger than four points, as Moorcroft took a 30-29 halftime edge. Lusk retook the lead as the third quarter ended with the 38-37 score.

The difference in the game came down to the free-throw line as four Tigers combined to go 9 for 11 while the Wolves were just 3 for 9 in the final eight minutes. The Tigers outscored Moorcroft 17-14 in the final quarter to hold on for the 55-51 win. The victory improved NCHS to 8-6 on the season with the second round of SEWAC games starting this weekend.
