The Community of Lusk Elementary and Middle School

The last two LEMS articles we discussed different aspects of the concept of community. First we learned about the philosophy of PLC and how itís incorporated into our classrooms. Next we spoke about our middle school student council and primetime groups. Another aspect of community in our school is our educational field trips. On many of our excursions there is more than one grade involved. Regardless of the destination, the experiences gained are great opportunities for learning.

Almost all of the grades visited the Ellis Harvest Home west of Lingle. The Kindergarten through Second graders visited the Pumpkin Patch, as it is more affectionately known, and experienced the corn maze and picked out their pumpkins together. The third and fifth grade classrooms also visited the pumpkin patch together. On this trip they were joined by six high school students who helped our young kids get through the maze and pick out pumpkins too. It was absolutely wonderful seeing the older kids helping the younger ones picking out and carrying their pumpkins. The Middle School Primetime groups also traveled together to the Pumpkin Patch. Mentorship and companionship played big roles on these trips.
