Vaudville show ‘Fabulous Follies of 2012’ deemed a success

Posted: Friday, Nov 23rd, 2012

With the auditorium of Niobrara County High School nearly packed Friday night, Nov. 16, the community enjoyed a night of laughter and reminiscing of old fashion song and dance with a dash of comedy.

Director Randy Hills and Silver Cliff Theatre Company presented the Fabulous Follies of 2012. With a cast of 23 actors, actresses, singers and dancers, the local thespians presented 22 small performances, including skits, musicals, tap dancing, crooners and the interruption of one cast member who insisted on having his own number.

Phil Myer and Ross Diercks had the audience laughing uncontrollably during their Crime Scene tongue twisting tirade over stolen cooper clappers. The older audience members enjoyed the Silver Cliff Crooners singing nostalgic songs. The Silver Cliff Stompers had members of the audience keeping in step as they tap danced to several numbers.

The performances were well prepared and many enjoyed the Usherettes as they brought out signs telling of what the next performances were going to be. Bob Johnson, who was the local horticulturalist, would make routine entrances during the set changes with a small plant, which towards the end miraculously became a large tree.

Throughout the performance, Phillip Collins continued to interrupt ‘Mr. Conductor’ (Hills), begging to do his number. Hills finally relented and what many were expecting to be a great finale to the numbers ended with Collins playing a the familiar Andy Griffith Show theme on a kazoo.

“This was our most ambitious undertaking in terms of getting so many people involved in a production. We generally have about one third as many people in a cast, and I was really pleased with how it turned out,” Hills said of the performances.

“Many of the performers surprised us by the amount of talent they possessed. We all ended up having a great time performing this show together! We kind of became a family, and that is one of the best things I like about theatre!”

The cast of the Fabulous Follies were: Bryn Bruch, Gayle Johnson, Sandra Figenser, Lilly Canaday, Sabrina Canaday, Ellen Rush, Bob Johnson, Polly Johnson, Phillip Collins, Brandi MacKinney, Randy Hills, Becky Freeman, Heather Goddard, Brooke Herren, Amanda Dawson, Barbara Cushman, Ross Diercks, Norma Langston, Nick Johnson, and Ian Zerbe. Crew members that helped with sound and lights were Teresa Tucker, Jim Tangney and Michael Tucker.
