That’ll buy a lot of rice...” was the response by Dr. Huitt following a very successful bake sale on Friday morning, Feb. 12, held at the Niobrara Senior Center.
Generous individuals made donations in addition to their purchases of delicious baked goods which raised a total of $463, which will be forwarded to Feeding Haiti.com, a 501C3 organization that provides free medical care as well as food, and other needs for those living in the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. For those who missed out on the bake sale, they can access the website www.feedinghaiti.com and help support the need by making their donation over the Internet.
Dr. Huitt’s sixth medical mission trip to Haiti had taken him to Anse-A-Galet, the village on the island of La Gonave about 30 miles by sea from Port-au-Prince, which suffered the severe 7.0 quake a month ago. Damage on La Gonave was not as severe as on the main island, however conditions made it wise to return at this time. Following his return, which was fraught with serious challenges due to travel restrictions and difficulties caused by the damage, local citizens have learned of the obvious need for food, which is extremely scarce at this time.
