   Behind Enemy Lines

“How ‘bout them Cowboys?” is a rallying cry for UW and America’s Team right now. WYO is in line for a bowl game and found a way to right the ship after last week’s 3OT loss at UNLV. The final two games of the regular season are crucial as San Diego State came to Laramie last Saturday and the Pokes won another exciting game 34-33. They finish off with a trip to New Mexico this weekend with the conference title game and a Bowl game still within reach. As of this writing CSU is beating the Lobos 28-7 at halftime, and a Rams win would greatly help UW’s fortunes. Dallas on the other hand is a loaded cannon on the offensive side of the ball. While Dak Prescott is currently leading the offense to new heights, Tony Romo is waiting in the wings. They often say that when you have two qualified quarterbacks-you have none. In this case I hope they are wrong. Prescott will hit a wall, and Romo will be inserted into a game, until he gets hurt again. I love the heart he has put in for ten years, but think his best role now is as mentor and bullpen relief. I’m not going to rave on about the offensive stars, as our defense needs to stay healthy for a deep title run! Dickinson State went to Butte, MT to face Montana Tech for the first round of the NAIA playoffs last Saturday. Things didn’t work out like the Blue Hawks had hoped in the 28-21 loss. DSU finished with a 9-3 record and have won the last two NSAA conference championships. The following paragraphs were posted in my facebook column three weeks ago but have continued to linger in my mind. I feel it is important that future journalists and readers of The Lusk Herald get as much information in print, as this time in history will certainly be looked at as the decades roll on. Some will like this, some will condemn me but whatever- I am angry, embarrassed and concerned on so many levels. As a journalist who strongly believes in the First Amendment, I am quoting it verbatim “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” While I am sickened by the current wave of talking heads across the dial that play both sides like a drum, they all are guilty of chipping away this right with their petty, meaningless banter. Social media has made anyone with an opinion and cell phone an expert but social media and having a social conscience are two completely different things. There is a reason our founding fathers made it #1. Without this First Amendment, we could not have numbers two, three, four, five or the next 22. I’ll admit I’m still learning all of them, but #1 has been my favorite for a long time. I will always do my best to provide an interesting and responsible job of covering local sports in a fair and honest way. Occasionally I may venture outside of the sports world, but it is always in a progressive view towards the future. A future without this is against our given rights as free citizens. So many other items consume my mind: things like climate change, affordable and quality education and healthcare, marriage equality, clean drinking water across the land and a comfortable, living wage for all workers and freedom to live without intolerance and judgement. There isn’t enough ink for me to begin on the social injustices we face as a nation. Healing needs to begin. This has not been a very happy 240th birthday for America. While I am rarely out of words, sometimes the important ones need repeated.
