Lusk PD arrests alleged sex offender
Posted: Thursday, Aug 6th, 2009

On July 27 the Lusk Police Department had gone to a residence in Lusk to arrest Jeremy Everhart, who had a felony warrant from Valparaiso, IN for his arrest.

Everhart had been charged on allegations of child molestation and fled Indiana to Wyoming. The PD was tipped off by Valparaiso authorities that Everhart may be in the area.

According to Officer in Charge, Sean Dreesen, upon identifying themselves Everhart fled the scene escaping from the Police. Police Officer Mike Youngquist was able to deploy his taser gun with only one dart hitting Everhart. The taser was not able to make a full charge due to only one dart hitting him, enabling Everhart to run.

A combined search with the Niobrara County Sheriff’s Department and some local citizens was conducted through the next day. The next morning on July 28 a tip was received that Everhart was hiding in an abandoned house near the cemetery.

Local authorities immediately were dispatched to the house, where they surrounded it. Everhart told the authorities that he would comply and he was taken into custody without further incident.

During the search Officer Krypto, the Lusk K-9 dog, had been used in the efforts to find Everhart. According to Dreesen Krypto did an excellent job in helping to track Everhart.

The following Thursday, July 29, Everhart waived extradition during an extradition hearing in court. Charges were not brought against Everhart for interfering with a Peace Officer due to his waiving extradition. Everhart will be transported back to Indiania at a later date where he will stand trial. If convicted Everhart could face prison time.

“I would like to thank the Sheriff’s Department, Dispatch and the citizens of Lusk that helped out once they were aware of the situation,” Dreesen said. “I’d like to remind everyone that even though we live in a small town that we should still remain cautious of our property and personal safety.”
